Everything You Need To Know About The Ultimate Sri Lanka Itinerary

The waves of Indian Ocean adorn gently the pearl that Sri Lanka is. In my nomadic and romantic life on the road, all the travellers I have met have nothing but the good stories to tell about this tiny country. But do not go by the landmass, for it is diverse in culture, with a reasonably intriguing history. In this blog post, I strive to jot down an ultimate Sri Lanka itinerary.

From tree plantation to hike to the highlands to get a glimpse of the breathtaking views, from the most beautiful beaches to the towering temples, the sprawling wildlife with elephant, crocodiles, whales, dolphins and sea Turtles and many more; trust Sri Lanka to astound you in every sense. Amid all this I must not forget to mention the ever smiling hospitality!

The Arrival – Colombo

It is quite a bustling city, not too overpowering as the capital, however caters just to the test of the travellers with a penchant for urban set up.

Visit the tea rooms, the ancient Fort area, lighthouses, any of the temples (could be quite a challenge given there are plenty to choose from), usher generously in the local market. A day’s stay is enough however if you reaching in the evening you may consider staying for a couple of nights.

Start Exploring – Anuradhapura

For the history buff in you indulge in a few days stay in this ancient city predating 380 A.D. From Colombo a short train ride will take you here. Explore the ruins, cave and ancient temples of the place.

Next Stop – Far North, Jaffna

Needless to say the conflict zone of the country has recently opened door to the tourists, and can overwhelm you with stark reality. Indulge in the local cuisine, have plenty of dosa, with pickles made of raw mango. This Sri Lanka itinerary highly recommends a day trip to Nainativu Island with glimpses of Naga Pooshani Amman Temple. You can also consider hiking up to the north of old Kankesanturai (KKS) Military base.

The Cultural Capital Of Sri Lanka – Kandy

The much loved tourist destination of Sri Lanka, Kandy houses the temple of tooth( the relic of Buddhist tooth is security here), a beautiful lake to witness the sunset and many destinations nearby and also popularly known as the country’s cultural capital. You can hike to the top of Sri Pada, otherwise known as Adam’s peak, with other pilgrims. The journey is scenic and prized.

Ella & Nuwara Eliya

The relaxed positive vibes of the hilly country remains bright in my memory. For those who love hiking, I recommend Ella rock and little Adam’s peak. It also houses beautiful falls of Rawana and 9 Arch bridge. This is the place where you should relax and gear up for beach hopping.

If you have enough time and love hill stations, I recommend you could pitch in Nuwaya Eliya in your Sri Lanka itinerary.

The East Coast

Arugam bay of Sri Lanka is quite the off the beaten path. For the adventure lover in you indulge in the hot spot of surfing and great waves. New to the water sports? Do not worry, you can learn it here. It’s a beautiful island. While you are securing a stay here, I also recommend a visit to the nearby kumana National Park and witness the breathtaking wildlife. Hone in the cooking skills by enrolling in a local Chef’s class.

The Beaches Of South

A dense mangrove area – Tangalla which does not experience the maddening footprint of very travellers, hence produces three of the most gorgeous beaches of Indian Ocean. You can rent a bike to explore the area. A short ride by the bus from Arugam Bay will lead you here.

Galle

This is the last lap of the travel. The reminisces of Dutch colonial rule and European influences remarkable. It has heavily influenced the cuisine of the area. While in Galle, must visit areas are ancient buildings, massive forts, and also the jewellery shops. This is the ultimate Place to shop for souvenirs before you head back home.
